An Overview of the 11th Annual Personalized Medicine Conference
NIH Director Francis Collins will describe his vision for the future of personalized medicine during the 11th Annual Personalized Medicine Conference.
The vision of leaders including National Institutes of Health Director Francis S. Collins, M.D., Ph.D., former deputy director of the National Cancer Institute Anna Barker, Ph.D., and Duke University Chancellor Emeritus Ralph Snyderman, M.D., over the last several decades have laid the foundation for the serious consideration of personalized medicine this year by the U.S. Congress, FDA and the White House.
The 11th Annual Personalized Medicine Conference, organized by the Partners HealthCare Personalized Medicine system, Harvard Medical School and Harvard Business School in association with PMC and several other prominent organizations, will convene Collins, Barker and Snyderman as well as Paul Hudson, president, AstraZeneca U.S. and executive vice president, North America, and a host of other leaders to explore the science, business and policy issues related to the developing focus on the field.
The conference, now entering its second decade, provides a forum for these discussions and for the gathering of all professionals who share the view that personalized, or precision, medicine is transforming health care across the globe.
The event will take place Nov. 18 – 19 at the Joseph B. Martin Conference Center at Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA.
PMC Boston Reception: Nov. 17
The conference kicks off with PMC’s Boston Reception at the Hotel Commonwealth on Nov. 17. Conference speakers, organizers and participants will all be in attendance as the Coalition celebrates a successful year by networking with its members and friends.
Conference Day 1: Nov. 18
The morning of Nov. 18 will begin at 8:00 a.m. with remarks by conference organizer Raju Kucherlapati, Ph.D., Paul C. Cabot Professor of Genetics at Harvard Medical School, followed by Snyderman’s review of the status of the field.
The conference will continue with a panel discussion on the investment environment for personalized medicine. GEVentures & healthymagination CEO Sue Siegel will moderate the conversation, and Invitae President Sean George, Ph.D., Third Rock Ventures Partner Mark Levin, Metamark Genetics Founder Kenneth Weg and Genomic Health CEO and PMC board member Kim Popovits will all participate as panelists.
Richard Hamermesh, D.B.A., a professor of management practice in the Harvard Business School, will introduce the Business School’s “Swift Trials Challenge,” an effort to invigorate clinical trials in personalized medicine. Hudson will follow Hamermesh with remarks on the increasingly important role of personalized medicine to patient care and the pharmaceutical industry.
Following a lunch break, the remainder of the event’s first day will feature a panel discussion on precision medicine in community health care settings moderated by Barbara A. McAneny, M.D., immediate past chair of the American Medical Association (AMA), a “mini-keynote” from Barker, who is now the director of Arizona State University’s Transformative Healthcare Networks, a conversation on the perspectives of professional societies with panelists including AMA Executive Vice President & CEO James Madara, M.D., and a panel discussion on personalized medicine globally led by Gary Palmer, J.D., M.B.A., M.P.H., chief medical officer of NantHealth. The day’s activities will be followed by a networking reception.
Conference Day 2: Nov. 19
Following an introduction from Partners HealthCare Personalized Medicine Scientific Director Scott T. Weiss, M.D., M.S., the conference will continue on Nov. 19 with a discussion of the Harvard Business School’s case study on what it takes to build a personalized medicine company, which Harvard Business School’s Robert Higgins will lead.
The morning’s keynote speaker, Mikael Dolsten, M.D., Ph.D., president of worldwide research & development at Pfizer, will then provide another pharmaceutical company’s perspective on personalized medicine.
PMC will present Collins with the 11th Annual Leadership in Personalized Medicine Award at 10:30 a.m., followed by his vision of the field.
Beginning at 11:00 a.m., Foundation Medicine CEO and PMC board member Michael Pellini, M.D., M.B.A., will lead a panel discussion on innovation in the field. Sir John Chisholm, the afternoon’s keynote speaker, will follow the conversation with an overview of Genomics England.
Following a lunch break the conference will continue with a panel on novel efforts in personalized medicine led by Deborah Dunsire, M.D., president and CEO of Forum Pharmaceuticals. Jonathan Sheldon, Ph.D., global vice president of Oracle Health Sciences Translational Research Center, will participate in the discussion as a panelist.
The event will conclude with a discussion of the Precision Medicine Initiative in the United States and similar efforts abroad.
